Revitalized Medvedev Wins First Trophy in Over Two Years
Nineteen of Medvedev's twenty-one championships have been won on hardcourt
A revitalized Medvedev won his initial championship for 882 days with success over Corentin Moutet in the competition title decider.
Medvedev, a former number one, has had a torrid period, winning just a single victory at the major tournaments and suffering a setback at the New York tournament.
The player's varied form on the ATP Tour - and difficulties with his serve in especial - resulted in him dropping out of the top ten and eventually parting ways with long-term trainer his previous coach.
Now working with Johansson and Goetzke, he has consistently progressed in the past month - climaxing in a tightly fought three-set victory over Frenchman Moutet.
This represents his maiden title since the Italian tournament and maiden on a hard surface from that period of that year.
The win also means Medvedev has won 21 championships at 21 distinct events.
"For the first time I'm at a competition with my both daughters at once, so to get a championship is especially meaningful," said world number 14 Medvedev.
"This title is in honour of my child her name, because the initial championship I won when my first daughter my daughter was born was for her."
The tennis star, the 2021 US Open champion, had lost his previous six title deciders, featuring in that event previously this season.
His retrieving approach and regular reactions on the tennis court had prompted commentators to question if his ability to play at the highest level was finished.
However the player has altered his approach in recent weeks, striving to come to the net and perform positively, backed up by an improved service.
He recovered from a break down in the first set against the difficult Frenchman, winning 4 of the concluding five points to go ahead.
The pair swapped service breaks in the second set before the Frenchman, striving for his first ATP Tour victory, took control to push for a final set.
The opponent rescued four early-game break points in a tight final set before Medvedev secured a break to fifteen to close out the victory.
Suitably, he clinched victory with a point at the front of the court, with his opponent failing to manage a volley after over two and a half hours.
