British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a combined operation targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in hills just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a number of access tunnels providing entry to the depot... initial indications are that the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the strike conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - also known as ISIS - imposed militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation demonstrates our UK leadership, and resolve to work closely with our partners, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

UK warplanes have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of IS after its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their valour," the Defence Secretary said. "Including them were numerous British personnel stationed over the festive period. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who endanger our way of life, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and influential overseas."

During December, the American forces carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in the country, following an ambush killed two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. estimates IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in both countries.
