Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Key Part in Ashes Series
Pat Cummins has claimed 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.
The Australian chief selector George Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming Ashes series.
There were concerns that Cummins might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.
Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches kicking off on 21 November in the WACA.
Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the prospects of taking part.
"We know that the window is narrowing and various factors around that, not just the physical problem, but further aspects," he commented.
"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he will feature a major part. Ideally starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll reassess."
Previous Setbacks
Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.
He has a history of spinal problems, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in four years.
He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the Ashes.
Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the initial match.
Contingency Plans
Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.
The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.
The selector characterized it as a "small issue and stated that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."
"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the initial game as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.
"He was only going to play the initial matches regardless. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for another day, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
